A fiber laser may mark both metals and selected plastics, but the process window, acceptance criteria and risk points are different.

A common question in industrial marking projects is whether one fiber laser can mark both metals and plastics. The answer may be yes at the equipment level, but no at the process level. The same machine does not mean the same parameters, quality criteria or risk boundary.

Metal applications focus on permanence and readability

For metals, the goal is usually durable identification, wear resistance, corrosion-resistance requirements and stable readability. The mark may need to survive handling, assembly, cleaning or long service life.

The test should verify contrast, depth or color change, surface influence, QR-code readability and consistency over different batches or surface treatments.

Plastic applications focus on heat influence

For plastics, the risk is often whitening, burning, melting, bubbling or surface deformation. Even when a mark is formed, the surface may become unacceptable for appearance or functional reasons.

Different plastics absorb fiber laser energy differently. Additives, colorants, fillers and surface coatings can change the result significantly.

Acceptance criteria must be separated

Metal and plastic tests should not share one pass/fail checklist. A deep, dark and durable mark may be desirable on metal but damaging on plastic.

A practical evaluation separates mark visibility, machine readability, heat influence, cosmetic quality, cycle time and long-term stability.

One machine can support multiple processes only with control

If one fiber laser is used across different materials, the project should manage recipes, fixture position, focus, power, speed, frequency and inspection standards carefully.

Recipe control and operator permissions become important when product families change frequently.
