Fiber laser and UV laser are often compared during equipment selection. For budget-sensitive projects, the question is easily simplified into which one is cheaper or which one can mark more materials. A more practical approach is to start from material, process and total cost.

Material response decides the first direction

Fiber laser is often strong for metals and selected plastics where durable, high-contrast marks are needed. UV laser is often better for sensitive plastics, films, coatings, glass-related applications and fine high-density codes because of lower heat influence.

Neither route is universally better. The material's absorption, color, coating, thickness and thermal tolerance decide the practical direction.

Mark requirements define the process window

A large date code, small serial number, high-density QR code and DataMatrix code have different requirements. Human-readable text and machine-readable traceability codes should be evaluated separately.

The required contrast, edge quality, code grade, heat influence and durability determine whether the cheaper option is actually usable.

Line speed and interfaces affect real cost

A machine that works in static testing may not fit online flying marking. The project should confirm trigger signal, encoder synchronization, marking window, product spacing, data source and inspection feedback.

If these items require later modification, the apparent price advantage can disappear.

Total cost includes maintenance and risk

Total cost includes equipment purchase, cooling, fume extraction, cleaning, consumables, downtime, parameter adjustment, rejected products and future upgrades.

A practical selection compares stable production cost, not only the initial machine price.
